New Carbon Monoxide Alarm Law Takes Effect Jan. 1, 2013

PULLMAN—The Pullman Fire Department is reminding residents that a new law takes effect on January 1st requiring carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in most dwellings except owner-occupied homes.

Fire prevention officer Rich Dragoo said the law has been on the books since 2009 but as of January 1, it now requires CO alarms in all new single family homes and residences, including apartments, condominiums, hotels and motels.

"Even though CO alarms are not required in owner-occupied single family residences occupied before July 26, 2009, it's still a good idea to install the alarms," Dragoo said.  "Lives have been saved by those alarms."

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that cannot be seen or smelled and can kill a person in minutes.  Between 1990 and 2005, the Washington State Fire Marshal's Office said over 1,000 Washington residents were killed by carbon monoxide.  During power outages some people use charcoal or gas grills indoors or generators in garages or near air intakes.  During the December 2006 windstorm on the west side, the state fire marshal's office said 300 people were treated at hospitals for CO poisoning and eight people died.

Since January, 2011 all new single family homes and residences, including apartments, hotels, motels and condominiums have been required to install the alarms.  Once a resident sells his home, the seller is required to equip the residence with CO alarms before another person can legally occupy the home.
