PULLMAN, WA—As part of the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently awarded $1.05 million to the City of Pullman for design of improvements to Airport Road near the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport.

The project’s concept proposes several multimodal improvements along a 2.1-mile stretch of Airport Road:

>Wider roadway, which includes two drive lanes and a two-way left turn lane
>Shared use bike and pedestrian path on the south side of Airport Road
>Pedestrian sidewalk on the north side of Airport Road

The design also features an airport bus stop that allows for regional transit access, and for added safety, an intersection roundabout at Terre View Drive and Airport Road.

“Safety and access are at the center of everything the Airport Road improvement project is about,” said City Public Works Director Shawn Kohtz. “The RAISE grant invests in multimodal transportation infrastructure on a crucial roadway shared by Pullman and our neighbors across the Palouse.”

Next, the City will use the awarded RAISE grant funds to produce the project’s design. The City will apply for a future RAISE grant to secure funding for right-of-way acquisition and construction.
