Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee

On August 23, the Pullman  City Council approved the adoption of the Diversity Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Committee as outlined in Ordinance NO. 22-20.

DRAFT Mission

The City of Pullman will use its resources and collaborate with community partners to understand and eliminate racial inequities to provide everyone an opportunity to participate in the civic, economic, and cultural life of the city to deliver a greater sense of belonging, quality of life and a sustainable local economy.

DRAFT DEIB Committee Goals

2022-23
  • Provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training for City staff and elected/appointed officials.
  • Coordinate a series of events and workshops designed to promote the community’s level of engagement around race to encourage dialogue between community members and elected officials.
  • Collaborate with Washington State Office of Equity & Diversity and community entities, including but not limited to the Chancellor's Office for the Washington State University Pullman campus, Pullman School District, etc., to develop solutions to racial equity.
  • Provide to the City Council regular and consistent recommendations of ways the City can partner with the community to become more inclusive and responsive around racial equity.
  • Enhance the well-being of all those that live, work, and visit Pullman in their interactions by fostering belonging and intentionally facilitating greater empathy, trust, mutual understanding, and cooperation.

Membership

Seven (7) members are appointed by the Mayor, and confirmed by the City Council. The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Committee shall select a chairperson and a secretary from among its members. 

Term

Initial Committee members shall be appointed to fill terms as follows:
  • Two (2) for one (1) year
  • Two (2) for two (2) years
  • One (1) for three (3) years
Thereafter, all appointments shall be for a term of four (4) years.

Meetings

The Committee shall hold one meeting each month.  All meetings of the committee shall be open to the public.

Responsibilities

It shall be the duty of the Committee to seek private donations and grants to fund special events, outreach, and/or other activities  associated with the Committee's mission, vision, or goals. The Committee shall propose recommendations, policies,  etc., to the City Council for review and adoption on a mutually determined as-needed basis.

Reporting Requirements

Minutes from each meeting shall (without limitation) contain its recommendations to the City Council. A copy of these minutes shall be forwarded to the City Administrator for delivery to the City Council.
