The Pullman Arts Commission invites artists living on the Palouse to submit works of art for Pullman’s new “End Racism Now” mural.  The chosen design will express solidarity to end systemic racism and spotlight the importance of diversity and inclusion within our Pullman community.  It might do this by re-telling art history or visually enacting other historic reparations. It might honor people or events that have had a significant impact on struggles for social or economic justice. Or, it might address solidarity in ways that we can’t imagine.

Entries will be reviewed by the Pullman Arts Commission with recommendations presented to the Pullman City Council for consideration.  Once the design is selected the muralist(s) will work with the Pullman Arts Commission to install the mural.

Mural location:  Retaining wall along Spring street between Main and Paradise
Dimensions:  120 feet x 7.5 feet
Compensation:  $500 for a single artist or up to $1,500 for a team of artists
Deadline to apply:  January 19, 2021

Compensation for the selected artist(s) is funded externally through secured donations.  Selected proposals will be screened for clarity and creativity in addressing the mural concept.  All works of art shall be subject to the following additional selection criteria:

  1. Be appropriate in size, scale and material for the outdoor environment in which it is to be placed.
  2. Be durable.
  3. Have high resistance to vandalism.
  4. Be maintainable at a reasonable cost.
  5. Be screened for content prior to installation.

Artists retain copyrights to their own images. Artists whose works are accepted for this project grant the City of Pullman and the Pullman Arts Commission the nonexclusive right to use and reproduce submitted artwork for exhibition purposes and for the purpose of marketing the exhibition and related programs.
