Cheers to 30 Years

When asked at the end of a 30-year career with the city of Pullman if his upcoming retirement was bittersweet, or something he’s been looking forward to his entire life, Maintenance Worker, Randy, said it was somewhere in between.

Randy retired on April 30, 2021 following twenty-four years working in Operations, and the last six years in Maintenance. Following his birth in the Midwest, Randy moved to Pullman, which he considers to be his hometown. Prior to starting with the city, Randy worked as a plumber. Randy enjoyed plumbing, but was uncertain about the future working in the industry would provide. Working in the Maintenance and Operations sectors of the city was an experience that Randy described as “great”, and “the best of both worlds.” Randy’s career allowed him the opportunity to continue exploring his plumbing interests, and learn new skills, all while building a secure future as a city employee. Over the course of his career, Randy learned skills that include working on large water mains, understanding how to effectively manage and run equipment, among many other things. Randy also learned how much water a typical Pullman resident uses during a day, which he found surprising.

Helpful hints from Randy:
To a new member of the M&O Team: Keep a positive attitude, and work well with others.

To those approaching retirement: Start analyzing your retirement plan five years out, put more funds in deferred plans, and have a conversation with Social Security two years prior to your target retirement date.

Randy wishes good luck to everyone in the Maintenance and Operations Division, and hopes that the friendships and connections grown over the years will continue in the future.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Randy for his many years of service and knowledge shared with the city. Best of luck in retirement, Randy, enjoy!
